FUTURE LEADERS - JULY 2020
Dear Future Leaders
We are excited to relaunch our former Young Professionals Program as the Emerging Leaders (EL) Program, and bring our two national leaders' networks closer together. As such, our renowned Fellowship Mentoring Program, in combination with the EL program, will be collectively known as the Future Leaders Network. This network of ELs and Fellows will now receive our quarterly Future Leaders Newsletter which will provide a platform to share ideas, industry updates and event information.
Our Fellowship Council has been working hard to grow the EL network and guide the development of our Fellowship Program, and we encourage you to let us know who your organisation's ELs are so we can engage them in our activity moving forward.
Since the COVID-19 restrictions were imposed, RA has continued to successfully engage through online platforms. Tailored panel discussions with the EL network are underway, with the second Talking Heads session scheduled for 4 August. There will be continued Fellows Leadership Virtual Roundtables, and RA is excited for the upcoming release of the Emerging Leaders Podcast series.
With the Fellows Mid-Year workshop wrapping up, group project teams are well underway in their investigations on ‘Redesigning work to reduce mental harm’. With paper submissions due mid-August, we would welcome contributions from willing industry members who are passionate about improving the mental health of the industry.
Further to the projects, and as most of us are being tested in terms of resilience, we encourage you to access assistance if you need it - particularly if you are facing additional lockdown and isolation. As recently featured on Triple J’s program Hack, Lifeline (13 11 14, phone service available 24/7) is seeing a surge in requests for support via it’s now active text line (0477 13 11 14, available 6pm – midnight) with over half of these contacts being made by Australians under 24 years of age. We also encourage you to remind your teams that there is always someone to whom they can talk.
Flexibility and Adaptability
Finally, it's exciting to see the shift in attitude towards flexible work arrangements for many organisations. While there are well-understood benefits of collaborative working within a team environment, many businesses are recognising the ability of their staff to work productively with a greater reliance on technology to connect. We are learning many valuable lessons on reducing traffic and emissions, the impacts on inclusion and engaging a diverse workforce through flexible working, and reconsidering what is classed as 'essential travel'. RA is excited to use these learnings to better inform policy decisions moving forward and and access a wider talent pool. If you have any positive stories on how your organisation has responded to these changes we would love to hear them.
Warm wishes and stay connected!

Fellows Mid-Year Workshop (Part One) & Fellows webinar with Ken Kanofski
Part One of the Fellowship Mid-Year Workshop brought together our 2020 cohort for an RA policy briefing and to begin work on their group projects – this year focusing on mental health among the white collar workforce. We were joined by Associate Professor Luke Downey for a briefing on key mental health issues, followed by former CEO of RMS, Ken Kanofski, who shared his 15+ year experience as a CEO of large organisations, including his thoughts on leadership and effective government relations.
Fellows Mid-Year Workshop (Part Two)
The 2020 Fellows were joined by Alison Mirams, CEO, Roberts Pizzarotti and John Anderson, GM Operations, John Holland to kick off Part Two of the Mid-Year Workshop in July. Alison and John spoke to the topic of leading healthy teams; discussing the importance of having a healthy team both physically and mentally, work-life balance and why driving positive mental health outcomes through leadership is critical.
This was followed by an impressive CEO panel discussion with Dennis Cliche, President, Samsung C&T Australia; Dr. Gillian Miles, CEO and Commissioner, National Transport Commission; and Malcolm McDowall, CEO, Arcadis Australia Pacific. Our panellists provided some fantastic insights on what it's like to step up into your first CEO role, the changing nature of a CEO, and the intricacies of being a leader within government.
