Sydney Metro West inquiry report released

New South Wales’ Legislative Assembly Committee on Transport and Infrastructure has tabled its final report as part of its inquiry into the Sydney Metro West project, following the release of the interim report in November of last year.

The inquiry was established following a referral from NSW Minister for Transport, Jo Haylen, in August 2023, with a public hearing held in October. As part of the inquiry the Committee examined aspects of the project, including its original business case, the cause of cost and timeline blowouts and the establishment of the route and selection of station locations.

The Committee received 34 submissions from a range of stakeholders and heard from 28 witnesses, including community and business advocacy groups, NSW Government departments and agencies and local councils.

Committee Chair, Ms Lynda Voltz MP, said the report responds to a number of concerns raised by stakeholders who gave evidence in the inquiry.

The report makes 8 findings and 6 recommendations to improve the project’s outcomes. The Committee recommended that additional stations be considered and that the NSW Government consider establishing a single management authority for the project.

The Committee also recommended that the NSW Government consider a business case on amending the route alignment to support housing uplift between Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park. It also recommended the completion of urban masterplans to support appropriate housing and economic uplift along the Metro West route.

“The Committee heard from a range of stakeholders that the Sydney Metro West project is a critical piece of infrastructure that should go ahead,” Ms Voltz said.

“Given the substantial cost of the project, the Committee was motivated to investigate how the Sydney Metro West can be improved to deliver the best outcomes for communities now and into the future.”
