2024-25 Northern Territory Budget

The Northern Territory Government has handed down its 2024-25 Budget which includes $4.42 billion for the 2024-25 infrastructure program.

At $2.3 billion, transport infrastructure investment continues to comprise more than half the total infrastructure program, reflecting significant allocations from both the Territory and Commonwealth governments.

The Budget also reveals the jurisdiction’s level of net debt is expected to reach $11 billion in the coming financial year.

The 2024-25 program is headlined by $2.3 billion in funding for roads, aerodromes, jetties and barge landings, including:
• $340.5 million for priority industry roads to support economic development
• $209 million for Central Arnhem Road upgrades
• $189.3 million for upgrades to Plenty Highway, as part of the Outback Way corridor
• $127.9 million for Northern Territory National Network roads
• $112.4 million for Buntine Highway upgrades
• $80.3 million for remote and regional roads
• $80.1 million for Tanami Road upgrades
• $77.7 million for construction of a new marine facility at Mandorah
• $71.6 million for the Tiger Brennan Drive and Berrimah Road intersection
• $66.8 million for Kakadu National Park roads
• $60 million for upgrades to Port Keats Road
• $51.8 million for upgrades to Tiwi Islands roads.

To support the delivery of private sector infrastructure projects, coordinated work across government agencies is underway to improve infrastructure in the Territory.

Investment in transport and logistics infrastructure is geared toward boosting the Territory’s export potential. The NT Government has acknowledged that an uplift in the Territory’s skilled labour force will be required to deliver the current infrastructure pipeline, as well as
improvements in social infrastructure to support a growing population.

To meet demand, Infrastructure NT has developed the Northern Territory Infrastructure Framework (NTIF) to link infrastructure planning to economic and population growth. This framework includes the Northern Territory Infrastructure Plan and Pipeline, which provides a detailed roadmap to investments that will support the Territory Government’s vision of a sustainable and diverse economy.
