The Federal and WA Governments have selected a consortium of RA members as the preferred proponent to design and construct the new Fitzroy River Bridge in the Kimberley, after flooding from Ex-Tropical Cyclone Ellie destroyed the previous bridge during summer.
Georgiou Group and BMD will work with Main Roads WA and BG&E to design and deliver the new bridge, with site works expected to begin in May 2023 subject to weather conditions and resolution of environmental and heritage issues. It’s expected the new bridge will be operational within two years.
The new permanent bridge will prioritise resilience in its design, so that the potential for further disruptions to this critical community and freight transport connection from natural disasters is minimised.
Main Roads WA is fast-tracking its procurement process to allow construction to begin as quickly as possible, and all parties in the consortium will engage closely with the region’s Traditional Owners to ensure key cultural and heritage considerations associated with the new bridge are carefully addressed.
