SA’s driverless vehicle trials represent a major leap into the future of transport

July 22, 2015 – Roads Australia has welcomed South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill’s announcement that his State will run the southern hemisphere’s first on-road driverless car trials in November.

“The imminent arrival of the driverless car represents a new era in transport that will have the most profound implications on every aspect of our lives,” Roads Australia Chief Executive, Ian Webb, said today.

“Australia has an opportunity to play a lead role in ushering in this technology – not just here, but internationally.

“The South Australian Government and its partners in this endeavour – including Volvo, Flinders University and the ARRB Group – deserve congratulations for grasping this incredible opportunity.”

Mr Webb said Roads Australia and its members had a close and obvious interest in the success of the trials and commercialisation of driverless technology.

“The challenge for everyone in land transport is to be ready for what's to come,” he said.

“This will have huge ramifications on how we manage and build roads, on road rules and legislation, on safety, on public transport.

“This seismic shift in transport can't happen without the leadership of governments.  A lot of work is already being done by various government agencies across Australia to pave the way for change.

“The road industry is ready and willing to work with government to ensure this change is as seamless, safe and expeditious as possible.”
