Transforming Transport Summit: Productivity: Supporting a high-performing sector

Facilitated by Roads Australia board member Alison Close, the productivity panel at RA’s Transforming Transport Summit discussed what is needed to support a high-performing transport sector in Australia.

In acknowledging the challenges, Kevin Devlin of Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority highlighted the need to standardise design in order to deliver productivity and efficiency improvements. He challenged industry to provide standardised catalogues of work and emphasised the need to improve understanding of data sets and measurement in driving efficiency.

Digital and tech enhancements were identified as key opportunities for productivity improvements. Jason Spears of CPB Contractors shared that CPB Contractors have identified 43 processes to be improved with digitisation, including enhancements to digital modelling to aid construction techniques and to minimise time on site.

Kate West further shared global examples of how Arup is implementing digitisation improvements to boost productivity including digital twinning.

The panel also considered the need for collaboration as an opportunity for leaders to drive productivity; what the industry can do to attract and importantly retain a skilled workforce in the context of local and global skill shortages; and the potential role of AI in boosting efficiency.
