Gary Liddle Memorial Trophy awarded

The inaugural iRAP Gary Liddle Memorial Trophy has been presented for the first time at the XXVIIth World Road Congress in Prague.

The International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) named the perpetual award after Gary following his passing earlier this year.

Gary served the transport industry for more than 40 years including as a Roads Australia Board Director. In that time, he occupied senior leadership positions in the sector, including as Chief Executive of VicRoads, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure (Vic), Chair of ARRB, Chair of Austroads, Chair of iMOVE and Chair of iRAP.

Gary’s passion for the transport sector and sharing his knowledge with the next generation was further reflected in his role as Enterprise Professor, Transport at the University of Melbourne.

In 2017, Gary was made an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for “distinguished service to public administration in the Victorian transport sector through leadership in policy direction, infrastructure development, road safety and regulatory reform.”

The award is presented to the world’s best performing road authority in eliminating high-risk roads with Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads one of the finalists.

Brazil’s National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) was awarded the trophy for its BrazilRAP project which in less than two years Star Rated 54,500km of its national network informing comprehensive results-based investment and 3-star or better policy to save lives.
