Message from the Council

Hi Fellows,

Winter is now upon us and if you are from the south or south-east coast of the country, you would be witnessing the crispness of the mornings and the early evening darkness.  It has always amazed me that even in these times where hibernation is very attractive, the quick pace of industry does not change and we maintain our commitment to achievement.

The Fellowship Council has been focused on several activities this quarter and one activity in particular, is front of mind for me. The Council is working on invigorating the bi-monthly catch-ups for the Fellows and the Alumni in your local region. Although in states such as Queensland whereby the Fellows have been routinely catching up, in other regions around the country, these events had not really taken off.

In Victoria, the Council held an early morning breakfast in Melbourne’s CBD with excellent attendance from the Fellowship. Similarly, in NSW, the Council held an after works drinks session at “The Swinging Cat” also with great attendance from the Fellows.

The intent of the function is to improve networking opportunities between the Fellows and provide access to your peers in industry. Given that the infrastructure industry is experiencing boom times across the country, the networking functions give an opening to connect with others working on similar projects or developing policies that will define the projects of the future.

Next events are planned for all regions across the country and we look forward to seeing you at the next Fellow event in your capital city.

Recent Activity

Young Professionals Event - Brisbane

Our first YP event in Brisbane for 2019 was held in late May, with a panel discussion on the topic of ‘lessons learned the hard way - what they wish they knew then’. Our stellar panel included Vince Sanfilippo, GM Queensland, CPB Contractors, Alicia Fava, Executive Director, Building Queensland, Rachel Fowler, GM Transport & Infrastructure, Beca and Ivor Peries, Technical Director, Clough.

We had over 170 attendees with networking continuing after the panel session - a great success!

RA Transport Summit Fellows and Young Professionals Session

On day two of RA's Transport Summit, a session was held exlusively for Fellows and YPs.

We began with a panel session facilitated by our Fellows Councillor Natalie Lockwood, along with Roy Wakelin-King, Executive Director, RMS, Erica Adamson, Major Projects Executive, WSP, and Jackson Ross, General Manager, Integration & Commercial at Transurban. The session focused on understanding the client’s wants and needs in today’s competitive market.

Following the panel session, YPs split in to five groups and did an interactive session on business development, led by Fellows.

Young Professionals Breakfast - Melbourne

Our Young Professionals Breakfast event was held in June with over 200 attendees. We heard from three experienced leaders across the Major Transport Infrastructure Authority discussing the challenges in the current infrastructure boom and what they mean for the changing needs of the client.

Guest speakers were Brodie Woodland, Director, Commercial and Legal - North East Link Authority; Alexis Davison, Director Program Services & Engineering - Major Road Projects Victoria; and Damian Brizzi, Rail Infrastructure Package Director - Rail Projects Victoria. Our 2018 Young Professionals 'PPP' Award winner, Teresa Tran facilitated the panel – her first hosting experience. Well done Teresa!

Teresa spent 2 days with the RA team in Melbourne as part of her PPP award experience. Over the two days, in addition to hosting the panel session at the YP breakfast, Teresa spent time with RA staff and visited the West Gate Tunnel Project and the Chandler Highway Upgrade sites, both hosted by Fellows.

It was a valuable experience for both RA and Teresa and we thank the Fellows for helping in coordinating such a great couple of days.

Young Professionals Group Mentoring - Brisbane and Melbourne

RA's first series of Group Mentoring kicked off in Brisbane in June, followed by Melbourne in July. The group mentoring is an initiative that was started to provide additional opportunities for YPs, and enhance the Fellowship alumni experience by allowing them to 'give back'. We received fantastic feedback from our YPs and we thank all of our mentors for making the time to contribute their time to a great event in both respective states.
