In welcoming the latest call for road pricing reform contained in a new discussion paper released today, RA says governments should take heed of the paper’s recommendations on step reforms that will remove cross-border inconsistencies and encourage a more honest and open public debate.
“The paper released by Australia’s motoring clubs, the IPA and Deloitte rightfully acknowledges the need for a measured approach to reform rather than piecemeal solutions,” says RA President, David Stuart-Watt.
“Harmonisation of light vehicle registration fees and regulations would be a positive step on the path to genuine reform, as would the trialling of technologies and charging models.
“One thing is for certain. Broad-based road usage charging will not and should not happen in isolation. It needs to be considered in the context of a review of our current road taxes and charges.
“We need to lay all the cards on the table and come up with an approach that is fair and consistent for all Australians, no matter where they live.”
Mr Stuart-Watt said RA supported calls for a national inquiry, led by the Productivity Commission, into road funding, regulation and pricing.
“The community has to have its say. But if we want a genuine, informed debate leading to real change, we need an independent, transparent process supported by all levels of government,” he said.
