Future Transport: Smart Cities

Regulatory and Technological Innovation

Roads Australia (RA) is leading a delegation of approximately 15 Australian industry and government leaders to North America from 22 July – 2 August 2019 to explore Future Transport: Smart Cities.

The study visit will build on previous RA visits to the United States and Asia which focused on Cities for the Future and the Driverless Revolution respectively.  A similar report will be developed post the 2019 RA Study Visit.

Our aim with this visit is to deepen our understanding of the progress, challenges and emerging trends in Regulatory and Technological Innovation around future transport and smart cities - more specifically, to learn about the latest strategies and solutions and how we might apply them in an Australian context.

We plan to meet with key participants in the Future Transport: Smart Cities ecosystem and hear firsthand how they are pioneering and navigating the technological landscape and regulatory reforms required to enable:

·         Customer-centricity

o   Including Mobility as a Service (MaaS)

·         Improved safety outcomes

·         Improved environmental outcomes

o   Including low-emission fuels and vehicles growth

·         Improved access to new transport solutions

o   Including driverless cars

·         Innovative and more efficient land use and planning

·         Road funding reform

This year’s RA study visit provides an invaluable platform for strengthening international relationships in the future transport/smart cities space.

We look forward to building these mutually beneficial ties and sharing with those we meet the Australian experience and progress towards Future Transport: Smart Cities.
